How IP Geolocation Works

IP Geolocation is the technique of estimating the real-world geographic location of an internet-connected device. Unlike GPS, which uses satellite signals to calculate exact coordinates, IP geolocation matches your public IP address against global registries maintained by network coordinators and ISPs.

These registries record which blocks of IP addresses are leased to specific telecommunication providers in different countries, regions, and cities. When you visit our website, our tool queries secure databases to pull the location coordinates mapped to your IP block.

IP Geolocation vs. GPS Geolocation

While IP Geolocation is fast and doesn't require user permissions, it is only an approximation. It generally pinpoints your location to a city or a regional routing hub, which might be anywhere from a few blocks to miles away from your actual physical location.

For precise coordinates, browsers offer native GPS Geolocation API. When clicked, our tool requests device location authorization. If granted, it returns exact satellite or cellular coordinates. This is useful for testing whether your VPN or browser setup is leaking details that don't match your simulated IP location.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the IP location checker find my coordinates?
The tool reads your public IP address and queries a geolocation database that associates IP address ranges with approximate physical locations. Geolocation estimates are maintained by databases that match routing registrations with city, region, and postal configurations.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is generally accurate at the country and city level (80-99% accuracy). However, it does not reveal your exact street address or GPS-level coordinates. The latitude and longitude returned represent the center of your city or your ISP's routing office.
Why is my location showing the wrong city or country?
This usually happens if you are connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or proxy, which tunnels your traffic through a server in a different region. It can also occur if your ISP has recently reallocated its IP address pools to a different location.
How can I hide my physical location online?
You can mask your real physical location by using a VPN, proxy server, or the Tor browser. These services redirect your internet traffic through external servers, making websites believe you are connecting from the server's physical location rather than your own.
