How Internet Speed Testing Works
Internet speed describes the rate at which data travels from the wider web to your home device (download speed) and from your device back to the web (upload speed). These speeds are measured in Megabits per second (Mbps).
Our speed test runs entirely within your web browser using HTML5 APIs. When you click run, the tool sends requests to secure content delivery networks (CDNs) located closest to your geographic region. By downloading and uploading dummy data blocks, it calculates the throughput of your connection in real time.
Understanding Download, Upload, and Latency
A complete connection analysis consists of three core components:
- Download Speed: How fast you can retrieve web assets, stream high-definition movies, or download games. This is usually the highest priority for consumer internet plans.
- Upload Speed: How fast you can send data, such as backup photo uploads, corporate Zoom video calls, or publishing video content.
- Latency (Ping): The delay in milliseconds for a packet to make a round-trip to the server. Low latency is critical for lag-free gaming or responsive live voice communications.
