How VPN and Proxy Detection Works
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and proxies encrypt your browsing traffic and redirect it through remote servers. While this keeps your network connection secure, websites and security providers can identify these connections using dynamic threat databases.
Our detection engine profiles your connection against multiple metrics:
- Autonomous System (ASN) Classification: Every IP address belongs to an Autonomous System. If the ASN organization is classified as a hosting provider or cloud service (like Amazon Web Services, DigitalOcean, or Hetzner), it is highly likely to be a VPN exit node.
- Known Exit Node Registries: Public lists of proxies, TOR exits, and VPN nodes are actively cross-referenced.
- WebRTC Tunnel Inconsistencies: Scans for discrepancies between WebRTC local IP addresses and public browser IPs to detect hidden routing bridges.
Datacenter vs. Residential Networks
Internet Service Providers lease connection blocks in different ways. Normal home users connect via **Residential ISPs** (e.g. Comcast, Verizon, Vodafone), which are classified as low risk.
Because bots, scrapers, and VPN tunnels are hosted inside virtual clouds, their traffic originates from **Datacenter networks**. Streaming platforms and bank gates routinely block datacenter IP address ranges due to safety ratings.
